Note on Mujo Series:

Inspired by traditional kintsugi* techniques for tea bowl repair, the Mujo works are items with flaws emerging during the production process that have been stabilized but intentionally left visible. The result leaves an additional “recorded happening” in the piece evoking the spirit of fukanzensei no bi and mono no aware – the ephemeral beauty of imperfection and impermanence.

“Mujo” comes from the Buddhist term mujo, meaning “impermanence”, alluding to the ever-changing nature of our reality where all things are in a state of constant evolution within the natural cycle of birth, life, decay into death, and rebirth.

金継ぎ等の伝統的な茶碗の修理技法に着想を得たMUJO作品は、制作工程中に現れた欠陥を修復し整えつつも意図的に残した作品です。これにより作品には、「不完全性の美」や「もののあわれ」等の精神性を連想させる痕跡、新たな「ハプニングの記憶」が加わります。作品名にある「MUJO」は、仏教の「無常」であり、我々が体験する現実では、神羅万象が常に自然のサイクルとして進みつづけ、生まれて生きてはいずれ絶えて死に、そして新たに誕生していくことを示唆するタイトルです。
